Carbon is slightly more electronegative than hydrogen. Thus, carbon atom in analkyl (say methyl) group has higher electron density around it as compared with an H atom. As a result, alkyl group are able to donate electrons inductively whenattached to a π system.

In a metallic bond, why positive ions are called kernels, not cations?
The kernel is an atom without its valence electrons that are weakly bonded; no electron belongs to one nucleus, valence electrons can move one kernel to another. So it is known as kernel, not cation (have valency).
