In the advent of the 20th century, the Indian national movement was gaining a lot of power and voices from Bengal. Britishers saw this as a threat to their rule and control over India. Curzon followed the policy of "divide and rule" and divided the Bengal so that Bengalis became a minority in partitioned states. By doing this, Curzon tried to curb the prominent nationalistic voices coming from the Bengal.
