by freeing the mind, sages referred to the cessation(निरोध) of thoughts(vrittis), not suppression(दमन).

and if someone is trying to suppress the thoughts, he can be successful for the short term but eventually, all suppressed things will come out with a great force. 

instead, one can observe thoughts and analyze the origin and cause of those, instead of fighting with thoughts.

NO. Yoga is completely English. the original word is YOG, which originates from Yuj, and yes Yuj definitely is a Sanskrit word.

Yes, if someone considers Aasanas as Yog, and Aasanas are now a part of competitive sports. No, if someone understands Yog as it is. (Aasanas are part/aid on the path of Yog, not the ultimate goal, but are important{Hath yoga practicenors} to reach that goal)
