I believe that learning of Western Music or of any art initiates in a person - be it a child, adolescent or an adult - when he or she chances upon a craving to own it. This initial treasure leads to huge gains with the EFFORTS taken for practice with or without a guide. However, the genuine or unfeigned guidance, whether through a teacher or a book, cuts short a lot of time which is wasted by the technical ignorance.
