Not necessarily or compulsory. For example in hindustani vocal usually prefer to learn harmonium basics along with vocal. It will be additional advantage for learners

If you can use harmonium to learn vocal that is the best, because in starting you can't get the range of swars by yourself. So you need a instrument to learn vocal.
