While classical music base will be needed to understand the sur and taal - for which it is advisable to go to a guru, there are many other things you can do on your own. Listen - to the pronunciations and the modulations used for conveying emotions. Then practice, record and listen to yourself. Keeping aside all notions of what voice appeals to you, find your natural voice and pitch. Find songs that suit your voice and sing them. Let your character shine through the songs. Hello Dilpreet, it all depends on your taste of music. I presume you prefer to do more of Indian style of music, hence learning the basics of Hidustani classical is a must, followed by the various genres and sub-genres of Indian music (mostly semi classical like thumri, bhajan, ghazal, sufi and even bollywood music and fusion). I believe listening to the right kind of music is extremely important because 'Training your ears' is the first step to learns music. Hence, listen to Ustad Aamir khan, Bade Ghulam Ali khan, Ghulam Mustafa khan, Rashid Khan, Kishori Amonkar, Shobha Gurtu and all the legends as much as possible while you learn Hindustani Classical from your guru. Other than classical try to get guidance on how to build a Sureela awaaz (melodious voice)wit the help of 'Paltaa's from your Guru. So first two steps are find a good Guru (must sound good, be experienced and willing to teach giving you sufficient time) and listen to good music (try avoid listening Bollywood numbers released after 2009). read less
