Violin strings can be made from a variety of materials, including: Gut The original type of violin string, made from sheep or cow intestines. Steel Steel strings have a metal core and are easier to keep in tune than gut strings. They were introduced in the early 20th century and are inexpensive. Nylon Nylon strings have a wide range of tonal qualities and prices. Some say that nylon strings have a richness of expression similar to gut strings. Synthetic Most modern violin strings are made from synthetic materials. The core of a violin string is wrapped with a thin wire, often made from aluminum or silver.
