This is really subjective, at primary level Indian students are definitely cleverer than their US or UK counterparts. The reason for that is no use of calculator at different levels as suggested by Mr. Rao above. But at senior secondary and college level we are pretty poor again because of the infrastructure which does not encourage the students to explore the subject on their own, instead binds them to the fixed curriculum and they spend up spending lots of time on subjects\topics they are not interested in.... read less

Yes, Indian students are relatively gaining more skills. Because of Curriculum set up at varies levels and preventing usage of calculators at certain levels.

They fair far better in terms of calculating abilities. however they may not compete well in terms of applications. India has not done any invention in Mathematics after Ramanujan. That's explains our performance.
