If you can change your specialisation in a new industry, you become a fresher so from there you have to work for 3 to 4 years to gain expertise. As you have an MBA in finance and have acquired four years of work experience in the research field, you should think about something more relavant to your qualification and experience so that all your previous hard work can compliment in your potential job. Some areas that you can explore are Financial modelling (for M&A jobs, stock/valuation analysis), FP&A or business finance, which directly works with company business and operation, project finance or project management, data science, SAP FICO etc. In all these above mentioned, you will able to use your existing skills that you from your previous domain.
