How is Design different from Drawing?
Bhawna K
I am a NIFT graduate with over ten years experience in teaching design in many institutes including NIFT...
"What a pretty design!" we often say while refering to patterns, pictures or objects. We use the term almost interchangeably with "drawing", "sketch" or "art". While generally its passable, technically these are all different terms.
Drawing, as you already understand from the previous lesson, is a skill set.
Design on the other hand is much more. Designers look more aspects than making a pretty drawing. They think about the future, fashion, understand the markets and trends, materials & techniques, work with inspirations and then come up with a collection which is a sum total of thier research as well as aesthetically appealing>pretty!
But both are inseparable. While Designing requires the skill of drawing, drawing reaches its fulfillment through design. Ultimately drawing aspires towards being Art.

Many times people explore "Drawing Classes" without much knowledge about what what is offered and what they aspire to learn. Below are some terms and Art Lingo simplified for your understanding.
Drawing: (definition: A picture or diagram made with a drawing medium. The Art of Activity of making Drawings.) You learn to develop the skill to represent an object, outline a figure, plan or sketch mainly by use of lines. This is the basic step of learning.
Drawing Medium: Material that are used to create a work of art or a drawing. Some common media are paper, pencil, charcoal and pen & ink.
Pencil Shading: Shading is used in drawing for varying levels of lightness or darkness on paper by applying media , which in this case is a pencil. It provides 3 dimensionality, depth and interest to a flat drawing. It is done by choosing medium, applying intensity and special techniques. It is suggested to start pencil shading once your foundation in drawing is clear.
Sketching: (A sketch is a rapidly executed freehand drawing that is not usually intended as a finished work.) By Sketching you can draw a rough outline or rough draft version of a final piece of art. You reach this level once your understanding of drawing and shading is clear.
Rendering: Through rendering, we add shade and colour inorder to create life like depictions. This is the ultimate level you can aspire for. Your understanding of Drawing as well as Shading, in both Black & White and colour medium, should be clear.
Best Wishes!

What is the difference between Jewellery Design & Jewellery Drafting?
Bhawna K
I am a NIFT graduate with over ten years experience in teaching design in many institutes including NIFT...
Often Jeweller Designers are mistaken for jewellery drafters.
One may ask, "What is the difference between the two?"Well, how it goes, Jewellery Drafters sketch, draw or render a jewellery product. Though the piece may be original, more often the stress is on technical perfection.
Jewellery Designers on the other hand, look more at the design than technical perfection. They think about the future, fashion, understand the markets and trends, work with inspirations and then come up with a collection which is a sum total of thier research as well as aesthetically appealing.
In one way, jewellery Designers are also drafters as they need to have the skill to translate thier ideas onto paper or digital media; but Jewellery drafters are not really "designers" though they are often mistaken to be so.
