ai - when ai diagraph is used it gives the long a sound. For example - rain, train, paint.

ay - ay also gives the long a sound.

For example - tray, play, hay .

A small tip: looking at the above examples we may remember that ai comes in the middle of the word and ay at the end.

Magic e- a_e

When vowel a is followed by a consonant and vowel e , the magician e rubs over some magic over the consonant to vowel a and makes it a long sound from short sound magically.

For example: cap - cape

Tap - tape

Hat - hate.

ea - ea also gives long a sound

For example - bread, thread, ready

Long sound

Vowels a, e, i, o and u give sound to the consonants when we make words.

Vowels have both long and short sounds.

We can define long sound as ' the name of the letter is the sound of the letter.'

Examples of long sound words are rain, pain, chain, tree, bee, pie, die, magpie, road, goat, argue, barbecue etc.

The vowel a can have a long sound by using ai, ay magic e etc.

For instance: 'ai'

Example sn+ ai+l = snail

        r + ai+ n = rain

------------------------------------------------------

ee, ea for long e

For instance, 'ee' for long e sound

Sh + ee + t = sheet

------------------------------------------------------

  i.e., y for long i sound

Use of ' ie' for long i. ( Pie)

P + ie = pie

-------------------------------------------------------

         ' oa' for long o ( coat)

C+ oa + t = coat

----------------------------------------------------------

ew, ue for long u sound.

'ue' for long u ( cue)

C+ ue = cue

One more way of remembering the sound is by the quote

' when 2 letters are walking, 1st does the talking'.
