The language known today as Spanish is derived from spoken Latin, which was brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Romans after their occupation of the peninsula that started in the late 3rd century BC.

Spain had over 300 years to teach the Spanish language in putblic shools. Well, there were no public schools then. The Americans immediately opened public schools teaching English. It’s more of a lazy, unintelligent, lackadaisical Spain than anything else.
