QUESTION

Five sentences are given below, labeled A, B, C, D and E. They need to be arranged in a logical
order to form a coherent paragraph/passage. From the given options, choose the most appropriate
option.

A. The good news is that a major deficiency in rainfall, as had happened last year, is an extremely
remote possibility.
B. Two crucial indicators, the El Nino, caused by difference in sea surface temperatures in the
Indian Ocean, and the Indian Ocean Dipole, are both moving in a direction that is positive for a
good monsoon.
C. The first long-range forecast for the rainfall during the four-month period of July- September
indicates rain around the end of this month.
D. It is still very early days for a monsoon forecast for this season but at least the available signs as
of now are all pointing in the right direction.
E. Even the persistent & sustained heat is the past few days over most of central and Northern
India is likely to help in good rainfall.
(a) ADBCE (b) DABCE (c) BCDEA (d) DCBEA

ANSWER

b The paragraph follows the pattern of assertions,
which are then followed by data to support them. D is
clearly the opening statement. A should follow as it
again adds to the idea. Although ‘it is still early to
forecast’ in D followed by ‘The good news is that a
major deficiency is unlikely’ in A. Statements B, C and
E follow in that order as they demonstrate why these
assertions were made.

Such lapses of integrity are not unique to China,[[[[[ but poor peer-review mechanisms, misguided

(a) but poor peer-review mechanisms, misguided incentives and a lack of checks on academic
behaviour all allow fraud to be more common.

(b) but poor peer-review mechanisms, misguiding incentives and a lack of checks on academic
behaviour all allow fraud to be more common.

(c) but poor peer-review mechanisms, misguided incentives and a lack of checks on academic
behaviour all allows fraud to be more common.

(d) but poor peer-review mechanisms, misguided incentives and lacking checks on academic
behaviour all allow fraud to be more common.

ANSWER

a Option (b) is incorrect. ‘misguiding incentives’ does
not convey the appropriate meaning. Option (c) has a
subject verb agreement error. It should be ‘allow fraud
to be more common’. Option (d) is also incorrect, as
the parallel form is not maintained

QUESTION

In general, jobs are harder to get in times of economic recession because many businesses cut back operations. However, any future recessions in Vargonia will probably not reduce the availability of teaching jobs at government-funded schools. This is because Vargonia has just introduced a legal requirement that education in government-funded schools be available, free of charge, to all Vargonian children regardless of the state of the economy, and that current student-teacher ratios not be exceeded.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?

A. The current student-teacher ratio at Vargonia’s government-funded schools is higher than it was during the most recent period of economic recession.

B. During recent periods when the Vargonian economy has been strong, almost 25 percent of Vargonian children have attended privately funded schools, many of which charge substantial fees.

C. Nearly 20 percent more teachers are currently employed in Vargonia’s government-funded schools than had been employed in those schools in the period before the last economic recession.

D. Teachers in Vargonia’s government-funded schools are well paid relative to teachers in most privately funded schools in Vargonia, many of which rely heavily on part-time teachers.

ANSWER

(B)

QUESTION

A paragraph is given below from which the last sentence has been deleted. From the given options, choose the one that completes the paragraph in the most appropriate way.

What’s interesting is that very little of the outrage focuses on the assassination itself. By now, the West has accepted that Israelis will track down and assassinate terrorists no matter where in the world they hide. And, in the post 9/11 era, few people seem to mind. It is widely accepted that terrorists can rarely be brought to justice and convicted by courts of law. ___________________
(a) Last month an 11-member hit team dispatched by Israel’s Mossad traveled to Dubai and assassinated Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a Hamas military commander.
(b) All this has lessons for India.
(c) So, an assassination often seems like the most effective option.
(d) America infiltrates terror groups, encourages them to fight with each other, kidnaps and whisks away important terrorists.

ANSWER

C The paragraph describes the reaction of the west towards the assassination. The tone of the passage seems to be justifying this reaction. Thus (c) is the best answer as it provides the conclusion the argument on why assassinations are not viewed with shock or horror.

QUESTION

A paragraph is given below from which the last sentence has been deleted. From the given options, choose the one that completes the paragraph in the most appropriate way.

As society often reminds us, a woman never really has a home to call her own. As a young girl she lives in her father’s home and as a married lady, she occupies her husband’s. So, which is the home she can rightfully claim as hers? The answer is obvious – the one she buys for herself. More and more women are making this crucial decision and putting down their own money for a roof over their heads. ______________________
(a) From sweepers to the surgeon, women in the workforce are increasingly breaking away from past tyrannies and asserting their right to live life on their own terms.
(b) It frees them from that ghastly insecurity of staying in relationships that may not be in their interest.
(c) ‘My house...my card...my pc...my money....’— the operative word here is ‘my’.
(d) This new equation is not restricted to ‘people like us’ – this change is cutting across all divides.

ANSWER

B The theme of the paragraph is the dependence of women on their male counterparts and option (b) takes forward the idea of women deciding to own a house and free themselves. Options (a) and (d) although related describe how this change is not restricted to a particular class of women and hence cannot come directly after the paragraph given. Option (c) is Inconsistent with the theme, as the focus here seems to be more on possession and not on their need for independence.
