How do modern BI tools like Good Data, RJMetrics, Chartio, Yellowfin, Tableau, etc. crunch large amount of data without using a data warehouse?

It depends on the tools. Some tools simply connect to your data warehouse, others have a data ingestion service that receives and transforms data according to the desired configuration. Some (if not most) of the high performance services that I saw base their offer on columnar in memory databases with some kind of compression and indexing. Those are often very high performance on even the largest bodies of data. read less
