The problem here is that regional dialects are gradually weakening and becoming more “standardized.” In the strongest iterations of these accents, the “r” sound is pronounced if it comes before the vowel in a syllable, but isn’t if it comes after. I would argue that very few people speak with a pure non rhotic accent at this point. The majority of people I know from these areas fall somewhere on a spectrum between “standard” American pronunciation and a purely regional accent (depending on how their parents speak and their social background.) The inconsistencies you’ve noticed are the result of this gradual decay of regional accents. read less
