What exactly does the English expression "Good for you!" mean?

It is an expression used to praise or acknowledge something someone is saying. For ex:- If someone tells you about the new course they've taken up. You can reply with 'Good for you!' Although it is nowadays used in a sarcastic way as well. Happy Learning!
