Order of Adjectives in English

Mantra: Opinion → Size/Shape → Age/Color/Origin/Material → Noun

  1. Opinion (What you think?)
  • Describes your view or feeling about the noun.
  • Examples: beautiful, lovely, awful, amazing
  • “She bought a beautiful dress.”
  1. Size/Shape
  • Describes physical dimensions or shape.
  • Examples: small, large, tiny, round, square
  • “He lives in a small round house.”
  1. Age / Color / Origin / Material
  • Age – old, new, ancient
  • Color – red, blue, green
  • Origin – French, Indian, Japanese
  • Material – wooden, silk, plastic
  • Example: “She wore a new red Italian silk scarf.”
  1. Noun
  • The object or person being described.
  • Example: “A beautiful small round old red Italian silk scarf.” (It sounds long, but native speakers usually trim it naturally.)

Spoken English Tip:

  • In conversation, not all adjectives are needed; use the most important ones.
  • Keep the general order: Opinion → Size/Shape → Age → Color → Origin → Material → Noun.
  • Example (natural): “I bought a lovely new black leather bag.”

Practice:

  1. Arrange adjectives in the correct order:
    • Words: green / small / lovely / wooden / box
    • “A lovely small green wooden box.”
  2. Try describing 3 objects around you using 2–3 adjectives in correct order. Speak it aloud to sound natural.
