Dear Divya Before you can speak English in a competition you need to practice on your own. The best course would be to speak with your teachers, peers and friends. If that option does not give you the sufficient pratice, you can do it on your own too. For this i suggest all the students to read a news item or an article in a newspaper aloud. you are sure to stumble on some words. these words will be those, the meanins or pronunciation of which you are not sure of. In other words these are the words or phrases with which you have either no familiarity or little one. once these words have been identified you can look up their meaning and pronunciation. this way you will increase your vocabulary, which will stand you in good stead in a competition. Another advantage of reading out aloud is that you get to listen to your own voice and you know then how do you sound while speaking in English. You can then seek further guidance from your teachers in this regard. You can also try standing in front of a mirror while doing this exercise. then you also know how your mouth and face look while you speak. If you feel that any improvement is needed in your stance you can then effect it. read less

A real incident which took place in Mumbai some 20 years back. An American landed In a foreign bank in Mumbai to do some audit work. He was provided with an attender to do a few menial jobs like opening/closing the door on his entry/exit.The American Officer found the assistant not closing the door whenever ordered to do so as he couldn't understand American accent.The American Officer made a complaint to Bank Manager. The Manager racked his brain and finally found a solution to this problem. He advised American Officer to say "There was a banker" instead of "Close the door". It worked out fine. "There was a banker" phonetically matched with DARWAZA BANDH KARO

Has your grand father, grand mother, uncle or aunt ever corrected your Spoken English? In many parts of Tamil Nadu, especially in villages, a car was addressed as a "Pleasure" (during1960s). My father's elder brother worked as a Government Interpreter, English-Tamil-English, in Singapore during British rule and spent half span of his life there with his family. After retirement he settled down in his native town in Tamil Nadu. He used to teach English to youngsters and correct their silly mistakes too. Once we were shouting "Pleasure, pleasure" on seeing a car plying in our town. He explained how the word "Pleasure" originated. Travelling by car is still a pleasure but one used to feel overjoyed in those days. Some educated person called the experience as a "Pleasure" and villagers misinterpreted it and started calling a car a "Pleasure".
