Hi Omega, There are different accents in English, like the American Accent (3 or 4 varieties), the British Accent ( 2 or 3 varieties ), the Australian Accent and the Indian Accent (innumerable varieties because of the influence of the so many local languages ). You have to decide which accent you want to develop. The British Accent as followed by the BBC Newsreaders is supposed to be the Neutral Accent which is fairly well understood by the majority of the English-speaking public spread allover the world. So it will be a good move if you try to concentrate on developing this neutral Accent. You can develop it by regularly watching and listening to BBC News Channels and trying to emulate their accents. The Best method of practice is to improve your basic knowledge of English, to Listen to people speaking Neutral English, to get help and guidance from Accent Trainers / Training Institutes and to regularly practice yourself what you have learned and listened. It may take sustained interest and devoted practice before you get real results. The time taken to develop the ability to speak English in a standard accent depends on your interest, dedication and practice. It could be anything from 3 months to a few years. Learning by yourself is like self-medication and learning with guidance from an able Teacher/Trainer is like treatment with the help of a Doctor. You know the difference between the two. Best wishes for your Learning Efforts! - Ameer Ali (Master English Trainer, but not an Accent Trainer) read less

If by Standard Accent you mean a neutral accent, then it comes with practice. Keep practising to talk and change the way you talk till the time when people are left guessing your country of origin. Having a teacher for neutral accent can only help you as long as you practice outside the classes.
