Can you share your teething problems while learning English? A 1970's Anecdote goes as follows....... I studied in six various schools across the length and breadth of Tamil Nadu. Medium was Tamil. I couldn't interact with my classmates in English during my Professional College days. Many of them were from reputed English Medium schools. They were using slang words picked up from English Novels. It added insult to injury as my status in normal Spoken English was in a bad shape. Once I met one of such Silver tongued English Speaking classmates while travelling by a day train down to South. Our conversation was bi-lingual,me inevitably sticking to Tamil and he with his gift-of-the-gab English, that too in American accent. The eight hour journey went on hilariously and co-passengers were perplexed but pitied me for my inability to deliver even one word of English. He alighted at one of en route stations where his father had come to collect him. To our surprise his illiterate father started enquiring about his journey etc, in local Tamil and my friend replying in fluent Tamil.

I really liked the way you have shaped up your anecdote. Fortunately or Unfortunately, I've never come across such incidents but I would love to post If ever I'll. One reason could be that we don't communicate in any other language than Hindi and English.

Sir, we are indians at the end. No matter whatever language we may speak in our work and college areas we are still comfortable in using our own language while communicating with our family and friends. The basic thing to learn is don't think the other person is superior and you inferior just because he has mastery in some other language. Don't be embarrassed about not being able to speak english. If you really wish to be a master of this language then it will come with time. Learn english the way we learn our own language. Start from grammar. Make easy conversations. Learn new words. Read english books. This is no magic. It will take its time but will surely work. read less

I too used to feel that others were superior to me when they spoke fluent english. But once I got inspired from them instead of being embarrassed about it, some of worries were gone and today I am teaching english in a fairly good manner.
