I am sure most of you might have heard of Goal Setting. Three cheers to those who have actually done it and are following the same. I keep saying that people with goals win because they know where they are going and what they are doing and why. Though it is critical to set goals, it's all the more important to know where to start.
Whenever we are in some kind of a problem, we must not get lost too much in the issue, but try and see the big picture first. For instance, if you are a software engineer working on a project and you find an issue in the code you are unable to debug. Don't get too involved in the issue alone. This actually makes you develop nearsightedness. Just take a deep breath and analyze the big picture. See how critical is the issue for the successful delivery of the project. Check out whether you have team members or other resource persons who can solve it for you. I am sure looking at a problem from big picture perspective always gives us a right solution.
Similar to the above example, personal vision is like the big picture in the goal-setting process. One should be crystal clear about his personal vision before starting the process of setting goals. So what is this personal vision?
All of us have values which we live for. I am talking about those values we can never compromise on. These have developed over time and by the influence of our parents, family, friends and so on. Out of the many values, you believe in finding out the top three or five values. It is not very difficult to find out the top values if you list all your values and start shortlisting based on importance. Once the top values are set, its time to build your personal vision which matches your top values. For example, if money is among the top values for a person, he can have the vision to build and own an empire worth billions. If money doesn't feature in the top five values, maybe he has to rethink his values or personal vision.
Once a person is clear on the personal vision, not only the goal setting process becomes simpler but achieving those goals becomes much more probable and easier.
