Any art quality pencil will give you adequate results (Personally I prefer Staedler with Derwent close behind) but ensure you have a good range of grades. I work with anything from 9H to 9B although I tend to use the mid of the range mostly.

As you work to lighter shades, gradually reduce the amount of pressure you apply so you're not pressing so hard against the paper.
