What kinds of pencils are preferred for drawing portraits and why?

Any art quality pencil will give you adequate results (Personally I prefer Staedler with Derwent close behind) but ensure you have a good range of grades. I work with anything from 9H to 9B although I tend to use the mid of the range mostly.
