For pencil drawings: shade darker: press down harder on the pencil. shade lighter: don't press as hard. For painting (oil and acrylic): add the base color of the color you're working with, and/or black. (i.e. if you're working with a pink color then add in red, but be careful to not add to much.

When you're first putting in the darkest tone, apply the most pressure with your pencil or drawing tool. what kinds of pencil required for sketching? can we also use colour pencils and colour sketch pens?
thnkx Poonam for info, its really useful. But my doubt was "i have seen people use only black pencil for sketching. so can we use color pencil also." Art :- 6B is great.brought it yesterday and its wonderful.
