For pencil drawings: shade darker: press down harder on the pencil. shade lighter: don't press as hard. For painting (oil and acrylic): add the base color of the color you're working with, and/or black. (i.e. if you're working with a pink color then add in red, but be careful to not add to much.

When you're first putting in the darkest tone, apply the most pressure with your pencil or drawing tool.
