In this way you will get seven chords each built on a degree of the major scale. The interval of a third may be major or minor while the fifth interval may be minor or diminished. The chords built on the first, fourth and fifth degrees of the scale are all major chords; all others are minor chords except the chord built on the seventh degree which is a dimished triad. A major chord stacks up as a major third (4 halftones) and a minor third (3 halftones) ; a minor chord consists of a minor third and a majort third above it; a diminished triad is two minor thirds each above the other. The chords built on the seven degrees of the major scale of C would be C major, D minor, Eminor, Fmajor, G major, Aminor and B diminished triad.
