It is merely converting atmospheric nitrogen (which plants absorb cant) to the compound nitrogen which can very easily be absorbed by the plants.
It is done in 2 ways:
1. There are some nitrogen-fixing bacteria like acetobacter which do this.
2. Lightening also convert the nitrogen into compound nitrogen.
