Introduction:
We admire great public speakers. Most of us have a desire to be able to speak with confidence in front a huge gathering but seldom are able to do that, right?
What does it take to learn the art of public speaking? I will introduce the key components of public speaking in this brief lesson.
Public Speaking:
Many of us tend to think that public speaking means delivering a speech to huge number of people which is not actually true. Addressing a gathering of 2 or more people can be termed as public speaking.
Key Components (4Ps) of Public Speaking:
There are 4 components which can be called 4 Ps of public speaking.
1. Purpose: Always give good thought on what is the purpose of the speech. There might be many different purposes of a public speaker like motivating the audience, selling something, providing instructions etc.
2. Preparation: One might think that great public speakers need no preparation for a public speech. It is absolutely wrong. Even the greatest of speakers do a lot of preparation to ensure that they deliver an effective speech. Starting with the dress they are going to wear to the place where they will be standing to deliver the speech, every such minute detail is prepared well in advance.
3. Practice: It takes a lot of practice to deliver a impactful public speech. If not anything else, practice in front of the mirror imagining huge audience and probable questions that might come up during the actual delivery.
4. Presentation: This is the actual delivery of the speech. Presence of mind, humour, confidence play a vital role when it comes to the actual delivery or presentation in front of audience.
Hope this brief lesson has helped you in understanding some basics on public speaking.
