It depends - what counts as "practising"? I know that I had trouble separating playing vs practising when I was younger - I'd play, but definitely would not count it as "practising". Nowadays, I play 3 instruments. I don't practise piano every day these days - I have a relatively sturdy foundation. I play in various community and student orchestras, so the amount I practise is typically dependent on 1) what time I have available; 2) how much I need to get through; 3) competing demands on my practising time. I basically set aside 3 hours a day for practise. Viola takes up most of my practising time these days - I picked it up < a year ago, and am currently playing with various ensembles - I practise for anywhere between 1.5 hours and 3 hours a day. Any time left over gets given to piano / violin. However, this changes if I'm needing to learn something on a tight turnaround. When I had to learn an entire symphonic programme in just over a week (they were desperately short on string players), my practise amount was 3-4 per night, and a solid 8 on the Saturday and Sunday. Obvs I break my practise into 2-3 hour chunks because that's about as long as I can concentrate for in one practise session. read less
