During anaphase, each pair of chromosomes is separated into two identical, independent chromosomes.
In telophase, the final stage of mitosis, the duplicated chromosomes arrive at opposite poles of the cell, the nuclear envelope reforms around each set of chromosomes, and the spindle fibers break down.
