Distributed computing is a model in which components of a software system are shared among multiple computers to improve efficiency and performance. distributed computing is limited to programs with components shared among computers within a limited geographic area. Broader definitions include shared tasks as well as program components. In the broadest sense of the term, distributed computing just means that something is shared among multiple systems which may also be in different locations. parallel computing is the simultaneous use of multiple compute resources to solve a computational problem: A problem is broken into discrete parts that can be solved concurrently. Each part is further broken down to a series of instructions.Instructions from each part execute simultaneously on different processors. An overall control/coordination mechanism is employed read less

A distributed system is a collection of independent entities that cooperate to solve a problem that cannot be individually solved. Distributed systems have been in existence since the start of the universe. A multiprocessor system is a parallel system in which the multiple processors have direct access to shared memory which forms a common address space. Such processors usually do not have a common clock. A multiprocessor system usually corresponds to a uniform memory access (UMA) architecture in which the access latency, i.e., waiting time, to complete an access to any memory location from any processor is the same. read less

Distributed systems have been in existence since the start of the universe. With the widespread proliferation of the Internet and the emerging global village, the notion of distributed computing systems as a useful and widely deployed tool is becoming a reality. Parallel computing means that different activities happen at the same time. The term was mostly used in scientific computing (consumer computers until very recently simply were not parallel) where it typically means: spread out a single application over many many cores/processors/processes to get it done bigger/faster. Current big parallel computers have 100 thousand to a million parallel processors/cores/threads/whatever. Distributed computing comes from the business world where you have distributed systems such as airline reservation systems, where many people access and modify the same data at the same time. The machinery involved here is typically much looser coupled, and the activities in a distributed system are typically far less synchronized. read less

Parallel Computing: Parallel computing is a type of computation in which many calculations or the execution of processes are carried out simultaneously. Large problems can often be divided into smaller ones, which can then be solved at the same time. read less
