Excel is a collection of work sheets (Sheet 1, Sheet 2, etc) .. Collection of worksheets is called as Workbook.

MS Excel Macro(VBA) Specialist

Real technical term is workbook, but we wrongly call it as excel file. 'excel file' doesn't make any sense but 'Workbook' makes sense that is it has basis worksheets to work on data.
