Plasmolysis occurs when a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution. In other words when a cell is placed in a surrounding environment where the concentration of solute particles is higher thereby causing water from the cell to flow out this is termed Plasmolysis. What happens is that the cell shrinks in size losing it's tonic it due to water escaping. Now if this cell is again placed in a new medium which now is hypotonic to its inner environment as in the surrounding medium has lower solute count then water will rush in filling up the cell causing it to swell this is called Deplasmolysis. Place a potato in the salt solution and see. read less
