One of the types of chemical bonds is the covalent bond. Atoms form covalent bonds by sharing electrons among them. Carbon has the following electron configuration:
1s22s22p2
So, you can see, shell 2 (which is also the outermost shell) has a total of 4 electrons. Thus, a carbon atom neither needs to gain nor lose electrons to attain the stable configuration. It shares them to have 8 electrons on the outermost shell. It gives the carbon atom the ability to form many molecules by bonding.
