Ethanoic acid reacts with carbonates and hydrogen carbonates or bicarbonates to form salt, water and carbon dioxide. While the gas, carbon dioxide bubbles through the test tube, the salt and water formed remain as precipitate. The carbonate used mostly is sodium carbonate so the salt formed is sodium ethanoate, respectively. ( It is also known as "the vinegar and baking soda reaction" in an oddly-formal way. )
