A covalent bond is the type of chemical bonding where each of the two elements forming the bond share one of their outermost orbital electrons with the other to form a bond. Carbon has four valence electrons. So to attain the valency of the nearest noble gas neon( 2+8), it shares its four valence electrons with four other elements forming four covalent bonds. Carbon is neither electropositive nor has high electron affinity. So it is convenient for it to form a covalent bond.
