Why do keyboard instruments have bass keys on the left and treble ones on the right side?

Keyboard instruments are generally played with a more complex treble side than the bass side, and since most people are right handed it makes sense to give it the more complex part. This has been true for a long time I imagine, from ancient lyres and harps mainly.
