Basically, a keyboard is a part of a piano. In an acoustic piano, the board at the top containing black and white keys is the keyboard. The keyboard is not an instrument but a part of another instrument. Keyboards may be part of a digital piano or a synthesizer. A synthesizer generates electric signals which are converted into sound via amplifiers and speakers. It can imitate the sound of many natural sounds including the piano. This is why many people confuse electronic keyboards with synthesizers. Nowadays many people call any instrument that has black and white keys a keyboard. There is no musical instrument called a keyboard. But due to frequent use of the term electronic keyboard can be used to refer to a synthesizer. Even makers of synthesizers nowadays sell them as electronic keyboards. So, nowadays electronic keyboard most often means electronic synthesizer – a device which generates sounds when you press keys. A digital piano, just like synthesizer, is an electronic musical instrument that is played using a keyboard. Unlike acoustic pianos that use hammers and strings to create sound, digital pianos create sound from sampled piano sounds or synthesize an emulation of the piano sound electronically. read less

Decoding the Distinctions: Digital Piano vs. Electronic Keyboard In the realm of keyboard music, understanding the differences between a digital piano and an electronic keyboard is essential. UrbanPro.com's keyboard music tutors are here to provide clarity on this topic, helping you make informed decisions: Digital Piano: Digital pianos are designed to replicate the feel and sound of acoustic pianos. Sound Quality: A digital piano closely emulates the sound of an acoustic piano, offering rich, authentic tones. Key Action: Digital pianos typically feature weighted or semi-weighted keys, providing a realistic piano-like touch and response. Number of Keys: They usually have 88 keys, mirroring the standard piano keyboard. Pedals: Digital pianos often come with a sustain pedal, and higher-end models may include soft and sostenuto pedals for a more genuine piano experience. Portability: Digital pianos are less portable and heavier due to their furniture-like design. Built-in Features: They focus primarily on piano sounds but may include some additional instrument sounds and basic features. Electronic Keyboard: Electronic keyboards are versatile, offering a wide range of sounds and features. Sound Variety: Electronic keyboards are known for their extensive sound libraries, featuring not only piano tones but also a plethora of other instrument sounds. Key Action: Keyboards often have non-weighted, synth-action keys, suitable for various playing styles but less piano-like. Number of Keys: Keyboards can have different key counts, ranging from 25 to 88 keys, with 61 keys being a common standard for many models. Portability: Electronic keyboards are lightweight and highly portable, making them suitable for on-the-go musicians. Pedals: They may not include a pedal, and if present, it's usually a basic sustain pedal. Built-in Features: Electronic keyboards excel in versatility, featuring a wide array of instrument sounds, rhythms, accompaniments, recording capabilities, and various effects. Choosing the Right Option: If your primary focus is on piano playing, a digital piano is the ideal choice due to its authentic piano-like feel and sound. If you seek versatility, portability, and the ability to explore different sounds and musical styles, an electronic keyboard is a better fit.
