A covalent bond is formed when two or more atoms share the electrons in their outermost orbit to achieve stability, generally to create an octet.

As you might know, carbon has a valency of four (tetravalent), which means it needs four more electrons to achieve a stable condition.

Because of this reason, it can attach itself with a wide range of elements and form covalent bonds, which generates an entirely new branch of chemistry which is organic chemistry.
