Why did it take JavaScript too long to evolve as a back-end language (Node.js)?

I’d like to point out that Node is not a language. It’s a runtime. Narwahl came before it, which was a different server side runtime. See The Many Flavors of JavaScript, which guides you through the nuances of the JavaScript ecosystem. Bottom line, it’s just an evolution. And who says it was “too long” in the first place? Even today, JavaScript isn’t used on the backend as often as people think, though it’s absolutely true that Node has increased server side JS development. The majority of Node.js is actually used for build processes and desktop tooling. Over 97% of modern frontend code is managed by npm. read less
