I don't only know JavaScript, CSS and HTML, but they're pretty much the only technologies I ever use at work, because there's so much front-end coding to do and so few other people on the team who know how to do it well. There are exceptions, but most of the server-side developers I know aren't JavaScript experts (and vice versa). This is because the world of computing changes so quickly; there's only so much stuff one person can keep up with. To be a relevant JavaScript programmer, I have to study every single day. There are always new libraries, new frameworks, new techniques, etc. And my employers and co-workers expect me to know them. There aren't enough hours in the day for me to keep abreast of the front-end stuff and new developments in the PHP, Java, and Python worlds, too. I've been a front-end developer for about ten years, and I've always been able to make a living at it. I imagine that, in the automotive world, there are people who specialize in building dashboards instead of engines. read less
