Vidya,it varies from student to student.Some are naturally talented and within 3-4 years get ready for a full fledged concert,but for a very average student our advise would be to go step by step.First learn the structured lessons properly for couple of years,then start with Manodharma practise/sadhakam.Meanwhile listen a lot to get more ideas and learn from a proper Guru.With Gurus consent only you should start performing solo.Meanwhile if you are very much interested in performance,learn small devotional songs side by side,and sing in small functions ,temples,poojas etc from the beginner level.This will help in overcoming stage fright read less

I dont think it makes much difference...some times you will get the only benefit of Scale....otherwise the teacher has to shift into your Scale to teach you but in same gender case, you will find no scale shifting issues...
