Tips for IELTS Speaking Test by Arun Anand IELTS Trainer Trivandrum

Tips for the #IELTS speaking test.

1) The IELTS speaking test is like any job interview in English. Listen carefully to what the examiner is asking you and answer the questions fully and naturally.

2) Don’t use rehearsed or readymade answers.
The examiners job is to help you to get the highest score you can. If you give the examiner a learned answer, then he or she must stop you and ask a different question to try to give you the chance to talk normally. If you have ‘learned’ or ‘prepared’ the answer to every question you found online, then the examiner has to ask you more and more obscure questions until they find one you haven’t prepared. That’s their job, to give you a chance to show your genuine level.
When you learn answers, you are trying to trick the examiner. It won’t work. All you will do is create a very odd interview with lots of strange questions.

3) Don’t confuse fluency with speed. Fluency is about your ability to talk without too many pauses to search for a word. However, many candidates stuck at Band 6 go too far to correct this and speak too quickly. Paradoxically, the result also creates fluency problems. When you speak too quickly, your brain cannot keep up with what you are trying to say. Speakers who do this often use repetition as a way to fill in the gaps while their brain catches up.
