The main reason behind is the sucess of product. The web developers builds the functionality needed, but UX designers do user research, they gather the requirement what users are expecting from the product and what are business goals.
Let me also try to expalin with a simple example:
Suppose, there is a tailor who has stiched a shirt with all pockets and right sizing, but this doesn't give a surity that his shirt will be purchased by user. The other factors, which also affects in buying decisions can be the beauty and comfortable of that shirt.
Now a days, all the global leading companies keep UX and user centric design on priority whether it's Apple, Google or Amazon.

As a lead ux designer, your job is to collect the requirements from the client. And also:
1. You have to provide consultations and suggestions to your client.
2. You will help the company by providing efforts estimations.
3. You will be the frontface of the project from UX.
4. You have to suggest better UX process and recommend UX guidelines to your team.
5. You have to help other ux designers workings with you. Sometimes, you have to mentor them as well.
