It is the official language of India alongside English. North side people are comfortable with hindi. If visited to tamil nadu it is easy to communicate with them with hindi if tamil people knows hindi language.

Why can't Tamil compete with the Hindi language?
Tamil and Sanskrit are both classical languages,but hindi is not So, tamil is not inferior to hindi. So, there is no question of competence. Simply because hindi is spoken by most people, it's not superior to tamil.
