It depends on the type of guitar we are talking about. The first modern guitar was invented by Antonio Torres Jurado while the first 6 stringed guitar was made by Gaetano Vinaccia. Some people also consider Christian Frederick Martin as the inventor of the first acoustic guitars.

Although steel-stringed acoustic guitars are now used all over the world, the person who is thought to have created the first of these guitars was a German immigrant to the United States named Christian Frederick Martin (1796-1867).
