The kid needs to be explained about both styles of playing & let him/her try for a couple of weeks. It's more important what the kid is interested in & not the teacher or the parent!

Guitar Teaching Diploma of LCM, 8th grade in Plectrum Guitar and 8th Grade in Music Theory.

It is purely a personal choice actually. Again, it would be difficult for a 10 year old to decide all that. So let him/her start with an acoustic guitar. Finger picking on normal acoustic guitar is the trend now a days. So on an acoustic, he/she can play with plectrum or with fingers.

Its better to start with acoustic guitar as its easier to learn the basics such as stretching or fingering exercises. Once he learns the basics he can later decide what guitar to play with based on his music interest.
