The guidance and your practice decides your level and excellence. If you are under good guidance, regular & practice sincerely you can play a good level of guitar in 1 year. If your a beginner than be sure to start with acoustic guitar & then electric guitar. Good Luck!

It is said that, if you give an hour everyday for your instrument you gain an semi professional sense with in a month or two. When I started learning guitar, I played chords like a professional with in a month. I've seen many students, learning guitar for 2 years but can't even hold a particular chord shape properly. Completely depends on how much you practice. The instrument gives back what you give to it. Also I feel one keeps on learning. Yes you could start playing chords of your favourite songs in 2 months dedicated practice time.
