Is Präteritum in German language exams required in writing part or can perfekt tense be used as well?

They will ask in question paper, whether they want Präteritum or Perfekt. Perfekt is mostly used in verbal communication, where Präteritum in written. If it's a story use past, if you are reporting some incident happened with you, use perfect. Alles Gute!
