Knowing German is very important if you want to pursue studies and live in Germany. Even if your course is in English you need to speak German in order to live in Germany. The Germans love their language and you need to know it if you want to make a conversation or be a part of their conversations. A certification of the language is not mandatory but your knowledge of the language should be thorough. Also knowing German will help you ease your stay in Germany, be it talking to the locals, going to the supermarket or even finding a part time job, German is very much necessary when you live in Germany.
