If we consider charging mechanism of electro-chemical cell or battery,it is continuous process of injecting electrons on negative side(-Ve) plate and protons positive side(+Ve) plate. When we see an AC current graph it is sine wave or a pi/2 shifted cosine wave . It changes its direction i.e. the phase from positive to negative continuously with high frequency. so it is difficult to physically change the terminals of the battery with such a high frequency and more over if we use a AC power to charge a battery then during positive half the battery will charge and the next half cycle it will discharge and as a result the net voltage stored in the battery is zero. However AC can be stored in capacitor or inductor with very less output . read less

AC changes their polarity up to 50 (f = 50 Hz) or 60 (f = 60 Hz) per second. It is not possible for a battery to change their terminals with the same speed Hence we cannot store AC in a battery.

AC is only due to vibrations (to and fro motion) of electrons.. Similar to simple pendulum or spring system.. you cant store energy.. you have to use it instantaneously.. Whereas DC is due to one direction flow of electrons.. it is like compressing electrons by connecting to high voltage and releasing...

As AC changes polarity several times according to the frequency and the polarity of a battery is constant. It can not changes from +ve to -ve. Also, the AC storage makes average voltage zero by charging during +ve cycle and discharging during -ve.

AC changes its polarity upto 50 times hence terminal changes from + to - and vice versa but battery can't changes its terminal with same speed that is why we can't store AC in batteries
