6th Sem vacation would be an ideal choice to start Gate prep. This i am suggesting because till then most of the core subjects would be over in college. Furthermore your gate theoretical fundamentals will be useful in project work.

Hey Ashsish, if you want to take GATE exam, there is no need to take any coaching, just concentrate on the basics and solve problems from various books, you can also refer to following blog http://krajnishtiwari.blogspot.in/. But if you want coaching, You should start it in 5th or 6th sem.

If you any difficulty. You may also take coaching from any Gate institute / faculty. Most important thing you have to practice the numerical questions including last 10 years papers.
